Dual Registration

Dual Registration

When the Dual Registration feature in Protel LTS and Protelity PBX is enabled, you can register two SIP end points to one extension user.  The secondary, or "remote" device can be a softphone application running on a desktop or mobile platform, or another physical desk set. Both end points share the same attributes, including voicemail, caller ID, SIP password and custom permissions. The ring behavior for inbound calls is set by dialing a feature code (36 is the default) from either of the registered phones.
1. Enable Dual Registration in the PBX.   Extensons->Modify Existing Extension->[Advanced Tab].  Checking the "Enable" box opens additional options.  Check the "Sip Peer" box and leave the external number and trunk options blank.  Save your changes and execute a PBX reload.
2. Register the second end point.   You will need to have the SIP password ready, so navigate back to Extensions->Modify Existing Extension and click on the SIP & Dialing tab to view it.  In the account settings for your SIP app or IP phone, enter the appropriate IP address or host name of the PBX as the SIP server.  In the User ID field, enter the extension number with a lower case "r" appended to it.  On the Protelity hosted platform, the User ID is the 5 digit trunk number, followed by the extension number.  Carefully enter the SIP password, since a mismatch may cause the PBX to temporarily block the IP address you are connecting from.  Leave the fields for Authorized user name and proxy server blank.  On most phones and softphones, you can leave the remaining settings in default.  Here is an example of the account setup screen for the Zoiper softphone:

Your phone or SIP app should now be registered.  The SIP Status screen in the PBX will now show two entries for this extension - the normal user and the "r" user.
3. Set the ring behavior.  From either of the registered phones, dial 36# or 36 and the dial or send key.  The prompt will give you three options:  Press 1 to have only your desk ("home") phone ring on incoming calls.  Press 2 to ring only the secondary ("remote base") phone.  Press 3 to ring both.  This ring behavior will persist, even through a PBX server reboot, until it is manually changed again using the feature code.
Any call handling behaviors, including group subscriptions, number of rings before voicemail, forwarding, extension feature limits/permissions and concurrent call limit will apply to both end points.  If your system is set up for ACD queues, you can log either phone in as an agent - but you cannot log both of them in simultaneously.
